Under general direction uses advanced engineering concepts and campus objectives to manage and perform the work of an engineering team. The incumbent is responsible for managing, planning, organizing, and supervising work in design, construction, and test of laboratory facilities, equipment, and instrument systems in the Graduate/Undergraduate Instructional Laboratories (GUGIL) in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE).
The MAE GUGIL consist of 10 instructional lab courses and provides technical and instructional support for MAE Lab courses and MAE Capstone Project courses. The facilities include a Machine Shop, Electronics Shop, Product Design Lab, Design Studio, MAE Rapid Prototyping Design Resource Development Center, Medical Devices Lab, Experimental Techniques Lab, Senior Experimental Lab and Senior Mechanical/ Environmental Sponsor Project Labs.
The student projects include machine design, sensor instrumentation, flow experimentation, heat transfer, controls, environmental engineering, and aerospace engineering. Course enrollments for these laboratories exceed 1,600 students per academic year. The incumbent provides a broad range of engineering services and support to teaching and research units in MAE while managing the activities of all technical and shop personnel. Responsible for the overall administration and management of the GUGIL: engineering staff supervision, development, process re-engineering and automation and workload distribution.
Carrying major responsibility for the accomplishment of the MAE GUGIL, duties include negotiation and monitoring of contracted services; coordination of scheduling commitments with experimental objectives and technical design criteria; successful technical achievements within time and financial constraints; successful management of all financial activities related to the laboratories. Regularly works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
Independently represents MAE at meetings, conferences and events involving campus, University, and extramural funding agency levels of authority in matters related to engineering design considerations, and the financial requirements involved in those considerations. Serves as the Department Safety Officer and ensures compliance with Fed/CAL OSHA and UCSD Environmental Health and Safety standards and requirements. Responsible for the coordination and implementation of a comprehensive safety program for the research, instructional and administrative elements of the department. Provides support to Management Services Officer (MSO), Department Chair, and faculty on facility/lab space management.

A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering related discipline and five (5) years of engineering experience in planning, development and construction of engineering systems to include three (3) years of specialized design work.
Advanced knowledge associated with the planning, development, and fabrication of engineering systems. Comprehensive knowledge of construction practices and the ability to provide multi-disciplinary interface with design professionals.
Advanced knowledge of specialized design work as well as the overall field. Thorough and in-depth knowledge of at least one sub-specialty including electronics, mechanical, computational, and fluid design work.
Demonstrated strong project management skills needed to assume responsibility for accomplishment of research objectives.
