The Organizational Location of the Position is: Phlebotomy section, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, VA North Texas Health Care System, Dallas, TX. To coordinate phlebotomy support to the medical technologists and physicians directly or indirectly utilizing services of P&LMS by coordinating and assisting in the daily activities of the team of technicians who perform phlebotomy, accession specimens, and perform other procedures necessary to ensure appropriate specimen receipt, handling, processing, and testing for reliable laboratory results. --Knowledge of approved venipuncture specimen collection techniques, patient identification, and specimen handling required by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), regulatory agencies, as well as the written guidelines of P&LMS. Knowledge required for continued acute awareness of the risks and dangers associated with performance of minor invasive techniques such as venipuncture. --Knowledge of patient identification methods and procedures established by regulatory and accrediting agencies, designed to prevent misidentification which could result in severe patient compromise or morbidity. Knowledge necessary to rigidly follow all established rules and regulations and practices designed to ensure continuity of patient and specimen identification, and ensure strict adherence to all patient privacy requirements. --Knowledge of specimen handling requirements for all sections of P&LMS as well as specimen handling for referral testing. Knowledge of laboratory testing necessary to communicate unusual and complex aspects and/or specific information requested by the medical center staff. --Knowledge and skill in operating instrumentation for CLIA moderate complexity testing. Knowledge of the handling and storage requirements for quality control materials and reagents used for testing. --Knowledge of computer systems relevant to hospital information system (VISTA) to perform basic data input and retrieval, and to perform basic accessioning and specimen identification procedures. --Knowledge necessary to analyze a problem, define the issues, determine alternatives, and develop correct and logical conclusions. Ability to organize and prioritize time for his/her duties according to importance. --Knowledge and acute understanding of the environmental risks involved when performing duties associated with a clinical laboratory and maintain current knowledge on accident prevention, safety practices, and infection control procedures. --Knowledge of basic clerical and record keeping techniques; ability to file and retrieve laboratory test information, either manually or by use of a computer; maintain daily worksheets. --Knowledge and skills in customer service and dispute resolution. Work Schedule: 4:00 pm - 12:00 am, rotating shift, weekends, and holiday. Tours are subject to change based on schedule needs. Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
