This position is located in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at the Conroe Community Outbased Clinic. The incumbent is a Health Technician performing a variety of clinical and administrative functions. Incumbent processes a wide variety of complex specimens from hospitalized patients and patients from outpatient and community based clinics; and procedures for performing a variety of specimen collections, processing orders and computer accessioning of laboratory samples. Identifies the patient according to established policies and procedures prior to obtaining the sample. Labels each patient specimen according to established policies and procedures. Adheres to specimen collection requirements by selecting the proper tube for the test requested and obtaining a sufficient amount of specimen. Uses current policies and procedures to make sure that all applicable patient orders are activated or proper notification to the scheduling staff of no orders or cancelled orders. Assures adequate supplies are stocked at all times and the supervisor is informed of all low level consumable supplies in a timely manner. Assures Equipment, Chairs, and Working areas are clean and safe for patient use. Consistently responds to customer requests in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner. Responds to Medical Technologist directives in the completion of expected work in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner. Correctly accessions, processes, and examines specimens for proper collection (number and type needed), shortage or other errors affecting the sample, and common environmental collecting requirements. Maintains a record of all drawn patients for statistical purposes including add-on patients and provides documents to the supervisor on a daily basis. Performs additional Medical Technician duties as assigned by the Supervisor. Answers questions as they relate to phlebotomy and/or available testing without jeopardizing patient privacy. Observes all established safety practices and complies with MEDVAMC and VA policies on Safety, Employee Health Services, Workers' Compensation related to on-the-job injuries, Personal Protective clothing/equipment, and Bloodborne pathogen requirements. The work requires manual dexterity and a large degree of concentration. The work is performed in a medical laboratory with daily exposure to patients and materials carrying infectious diseases and hazardous chemicals. Proper precautions are practiced. The employee has the potential to be exposed to communicable disease. The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around carts, or machines; with bio-hazardous samples, contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, and some risk of needle stick. Employees are required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, goggles, gloves or shields to biohazard risks.
