This position serves as the Supervisory Medical Technologist for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center on alternate shifts. The position is directly accountable to the Blood Bank Supervisor. The Supervisory Medical Technologist provides first line supervision to Medical Technologists assigned to laboratory sections on alternate tours. Major Duties of the position include, but are not limited to: Establishes and monitors the quality of the pre-analytical processes as part of the overall laboratory quality management program, and assures corrective action is initiated as needed; Consults with the pathologist and other healthcare providers on a systematic approach to confirm or refute a diagnosis and monitor the treatment of patients with biochemical disorders; Participates in the selection of new technologies, methods, supplies, and equipment; Plans, organizes, sets short and/or long-term goals for the assigned sections and staff; Conducts interviews, recommends appointment, develops performance standards, writies functional statements or position descriptions as required; Evaluates work performance, counsels employees whose performance is marginal or unsatisfactory, and initiates disciplinary actions when necessary; Hears and resolves complaints from employees; Works as a technologist and phlebotomist and accomplishes duties specifically assigned to staff in the section(s) supervised; Prepares documents for the purchase of blood supplies, maintains proper blood product inventory levels; Maintains an adequate inventory of blood and blood components at all times so that shortages do not occur during emergency situations; Documents and maintains permanent records of patient transfusions and of the receipt and final disposition of all blood and blood components; May assist the supervisor in generating a written monthly report for the Tissue and Transfusion Committee and giving a summary of blood utilization and transfusion practices; Generates the laboratory results from his/her area into the laboratory computer system and for the editing and verification of the results recorded into the computer system; Provides in-service training of staff on any new changes or procedures in the laboratory sections.
