The position involves work in clinical (medical) laboratories in performing tests and examinations in one or more areas of work such as chemistry, blood banking, hematology, or microbiology. The reports or findings may be used by physicians in diagnosis, care and treatment of patients, or in support of medical research. The work requires a practical knowledge of the techniques in a medical laboratory practice in one or more areas of clinical laboratory work. UPDATE: Closing date extended to 1/25 Some of the major duties associated with this position are and are not limited to the following: Knowledge of blood collecting procedures by venipuncture or microtechnique; Knowledge of computer data entry associated with phlebotomy; Knowledge of transporting and processing patient specimens; Knowledge of infection control policies and procedures; Knowledge of analytical procedures used for various analyses; Knowledge of specimen containers and anticoagulants used by venipuncture is essential; Knowledge concerning all equipment used for phlebotomy and specimen processing and the location of such equipment; Knowledge to use supplies in an efficient manner; Knowledge of quality control and safety in blood collection and specimen processing is essential; Handles relevant phone calls for the clinical and/or anatomic accessioning areas and where possible resolves whatever issues precipitated the telephone call based upon his/her knowledge and experience; Maintains orderly and timely flow of specimens to the technical areas throughout tour of duty; Assures that phlebotomy tray is adequately replenished as required; Assists with maintaining a neat and clean work area; Assists with heavy workload and willingly helps other phlebotomists who need assistance; Collects pre-employment urines Tox specimens and performs related paperwork and delivers the specimen to the mailroom in Federal Express envelope to be mailed immediately; and Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor and Administrative Officer of Laboratory service.
