The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System is currently recruiting for two full-time Medical Technician's to serve in the Core Laboratory/Blood Bank of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Program. The Medical Technicians are responsible for performing a wide range of emergency, routine, complex, and specialized test procedures in Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Immunochemistry, Urinalysis, Serology (including Covid-19), and Blood Bank with minimal on-site supervision. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/26/2022. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Perform routine venipuncture specimen collections from inpatient, outpatients, and ambulatory inpatients by venipuncture and fingersticks on a routine and Stat basis. Utilizes computer technology to accept, track and result patient tests. Operates instrumentation for accurate and timely results of patient samples. Evaluates pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical variables. Performs proficiency testing. Performs accurate ID of specimen and orders for routine and Stat testing. Major Duties and Responsibilities include: Performs complex automated and manual technical procedures that include but are not limited to: type and screens, compatibility testing, unit confirmations, antibody screens and antibody identification when appropriate, automated chemistry panels, immunochemistry panels, osmolality, urine pregnancy, complete blood counts, reticulocyte counts, coagulation tests, mixing studies, urinalysis, body fluid analysis, peripheral smear evaluation, chromatography (HPLC), toxicology screenings, HIV testing, enzyme immunoassay, special studies, and Covid-19 testing Evaluates requested procedures to determine the suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting new specimens if necessary Prepares reagents and primary reference materials; selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of routine and complex procedures using manual and/or micro-processor controlled instruments in accordance with established laboratory medicine protocols Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts, performs routine preventative maintenance and documents service on the instruments Documents all quality control activities and maintains accurate records in compliance with accrediting agencies Screens test results to detect discrepancies, artifacts, and pathologic change that may warrant additional testing and performs repeat or additional testing to clarify or confirm abnormal results as necessary Responsible for preparing specimens for send-out and contacting the appropriate transportation service to pick up any lab work to be done outside this facility Performs blood collection and specimen handling on inpatients and outpatients according to physician/provider orders Work Schedule: The work requires five (5) days/week, eight (8) hours/day and includes rotating weekends and holidays.
