THRIVE is currently seeking a Director of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) to add to its growing team in Atlanta, Georgia. We’re looking for an experienced and entrepreneurial leader who will help build and direct the Human Factors practice and our client partners to achieve business growth through the definition and design of new products and services that are safe and easy to use. The HFE Director will ensure expert Insights and Human Factors input is provided to design teams for the development of consumer products, industrial/professional equipment, and physical and digital medical devices. This Director will have a unique opportunity to help position THRIVE for continued growth by establishing a best-in-class HFE service portfolio, realizing new business opportunities, and shaping the future of the HFE practice.
Direct and lead multiple HFE projects or phases at any one given time. Serve as the key point of contact for client relationship for HFE focused projects.
Show the ability to direct AND be hands on, should the project need it.
Ensure that human-system capabilities and limitations are properly reflected in the system, safety risk and user needs requirements.
Lead the design and execution of formative and summative human factor studies to address the needs of the requirements setting, design testing, verification and validation stages of physical and digital medical devices, industrial equipment, and consumer products.
Author comprehensive human factors engineering protocols and reports (e.g. Usability engineering reports).
Ensure that expert HFE input is provided to product design teams for addressing design requirements, packaging requirements, IFU’s, design validation activities and in support of regulatory submissions.
Plan and facilitate collaborative workshops with client partners to achieve a range of actionable outcomes.
Collaborate with THRIVE leadership to develop and communicate a HFE practice vision and strategy.
Lead the development and documentation of THRIVE HFE processes, tools, and templates for staff education and training.
Provide expert consultation to multi-disciplinary design teams and client partners to execute HFE projects/studies and assumes responsibility for project execution and quality.
Collaborate with internal and client team members to plan and budget Human Factors projects and activities.
Coordinate with the leadership team to identify and develop new business opportunities. Authors and presents thoughtful project plans, proposals, and presentations by working across THRIVE’s multiple areas of practice to craft a point of view, develop a strategy and help close business deals.
Coach HFE team members through mentorship, training, and career track development.
Identify qualified candidates for the HFE practice and actively recruits leading talent to the organization.
Provide thought leadership (i.e. writing, speaking, publishing, etc.) and constantly contribute to THRIVE’s growing IP and brain trust.
8-10+ years of experience in HFE both practicing and leading teams in all the disciplines of Human Factors and Product Design and Development.
Significant agency experience is a plus.
In possession of a relevant degree or professional qualification(s) (Human Factors Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, Cognitive Psychology)
Medical Device experience is a requirement. HFD experience in the design of physical and digital medical devices and equipment.
Experience working directly with healthcare stakeholders (HCP’s, patients, etc.) to gather, synthesize and convert user research into actionable recommendations that drive compelling designs.
Experience working directly with end users to develop and evaluate new product features, user interfaces and ergonomic designs, and with ensuring satisfaction.
Proven experience in the HFE/UE principles/methods of human-centered design, observational research, ergonomic design, human/machine interface, and data collection/reporting/analysis.
Deep knowledge of relevant human factors regulations, standards and guidance for physical and digital medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging. Good understanding of the principles of Medical Device and healthcare regulations including FDAs Quality System Regulation (QSR), ISO 13485, 14971, EN 60601, Council Directive 93/42/EEC, 62366. HE 75, AAMI.
Ability to converse technically with mechanical, electronic, software, clinical, regulatory, and quality engineering disciplines.
Proven experience using low through high-fidelity prototypes (physical and digital) to identify and eliminate potential use errors early in the development process.
Experience establishing, leading, and inspiring highly talented and productive HFE teams through mentoring, collaborating, and coaching.
Comfortable working in very creative, fast paced, and rapidly changing environment.?
Experience facilitating client experiences through workshops and collaborative work sessions.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Visio, Excel, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
Excellent writing and speaking skills.
Clear demonstration of project management processes and tools.
