The Manager for Ambulatory Sterilization and High Level Disinfection is responsible for providing UMMG wide leadership for the coordination, reprocessing and sterilization of surgical and clinic instruments for Michigan Medicine. Performs or directs the performance of systems analysis in order to create improved sterile processing operational efficiencies. Leads the development of strategic and associated business plans. Collects and analyzes data from various sources and reports/reviews findings with appropriate individuals or committees and executive leadership. The role will perform frequent consultation and collaborations to determine required actions and recommendations.
- Collaborating with Surgical Operations, Nursing, and Hospital leadership, and ACU’s to oversees the fiscal planning, strategic planning, budgeting, regulatory compliance, employee engagement and continuous improvement for the Central Sterile Processing Departments and partnership with CERD
- Advises all leadership levels on short and long-range planning strategies, industry standards for all aspects of instrument processing and sterilization/HLD, and all regulatory standards.
- Build capacity for strategic planning, growth, and execution.
- Design, manage and monitor staffing models, quality performance & operational productivity. Makes adaptations as predicated by changes in work environment, demand and regulatory requirements, etc
- Design, assess and update reprocessing delivery models (centralized vs decentralized, etc)
- Develop / implement facilities standards (operational production, quality indicators, performance indicators, equipment performance indicators)
- Multi-year capital budget planning.
- The position provides and monitors compliance with policies and regulatory agency standards including, but not limited to The Joint Commission, CDC, OSHA, CMS, FDA, AORN and AAMI. Responsible for ensuring continual accreditation readiness with sterilization and high level of disinfection.
Operational Support
- Ensures appropriate management of the day-to-day operations:
- Supervision of activities of management and equipment reprocessing personnel within Central Sterile Processing Departments, High Level Disinfection
- Assessment of current leadership and reporting structures across the segment to ensure reprocessing alignment with adequate supervision.
- Provides operational support and guidance to local CSPD and HLD department leadership
- Develops and provides educational opportunities for staff and leadership.
- Partners with Human Resources, Labor Relations, AFSCME Bargaining Union Representatives and others in establishing, reviewing, modifying and maintaining fundamental department infrastructure, policies, procedures, etc. (job descriptions, pay structure, policies, competencies, etc).
- Ensures enterprise service coverage:
- Collaborates with local customers, Nursing and Infection Prevention & Epidemiology to redirect reprocessing work to appropriate CSP, CERD and HLD locations.
- Articulates a strategy for procurement and management of sterilization equipment.
- Establishes Service Level Agreements with customers.
- Assists coordination of dispatching resources across the UMMG Segment.
- Partners with Facilities, Maintenance and Planning in the development and building design of new/renovated CSPD departments
- Creates and manages plans for service interruption at one or more CSPD site
- Supports managers during inspections and ensures enterprise consistency.
Education:
- Associates Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or closely related field
Certifications:
Certification as a Sterile Processing/Distribution Manager through the NICHSPDS, CBSPD or IAHCSMM Certification Boards
Work Experience:
- Minimum 5+ years professional and relevant experience, including a minimum of 2 years of progressive supervisory/management positions in the leadership of sterile reprocessing departments, preferably in a large academic and/or complex medical facility
- Subject matter expertise of medical device reprocessing, inclusive of surgical instrumentation, supplies, equipment, sterilizers, sterilization, and high level disinfection.
- Extensive knowledge of Operating Room, medical instruments, and O.R. procedures
- Knowledge of Clinic Instrumentation and practices
- Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships, interact effectively and negotiate professionally with influential entities
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and influence others as well as to maintain an environment of collaboration and trust
- Ability to pursue goals, analyze complex issues, facilitate change in response to a dynamic environment, and communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
- Demonstrated expertise in human resources management; ability to lead and manage staff with diverse skills and expertise
- Proven track record in the recruitment, retention and development of talent operations, and sterile processing operations
- Must possess solid managerial, analytical, organizational skills and financial acumen
- Experience in developing and implementing process improvement strategies and quality initiatives (Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma etc)
- The flexibility to orient and work at all Michigan Medicine Medical Center locations
- Must possess strong computer skills and be proficient with various applications including Access, Excel and PowerPoint
- Bachelors or Master’s Degree (Nursing, Business, Health Administration)
- Extensive knowledge of collective bargaining process and AFSCME contracts
- Experienced leadership with Clinical Ladder development and the ability to communicate, network, and uphold the process
- Lean (TPS/Six Sigma) Certification
Full time, Rotational shift based on department needs. Hours may flex based on unit needs.
