This position is located in Pathology and Laboratory Service Line at the VA San Diego Healthcare System in San Diego, CA. The primary purpose of this position is to perform specimen collection, processing, accessioning and waived testing. In order to qualify for this position, applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum qualifications: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service. Specific qualifying specialized experience for this position (which should be documented on your resume) is: technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Sets up equipment for all phlebotomy procedures, making sure that all phlebotomy and ancillary equipment is functioning to standard. Determines compliance with safety requirements, establishes inventory and equipment maintenance requirements and maintains appropriate inventories and maintenance schedules. Maintains laboratory stock and orders materials, as needed. Calibrates and maintains laboratory Instrumentation on timely intervals so as to minimize breakdown and delay of procedures. Maintains and controls laboratory records. Develops and maintains detailed records of all experimental or other protocols and. results are neatly kept and catalogued in appropriate format. Records information pertaining to the storage of specimens or reagents and completes appropriate tracking/inventory system information. Performs all clerical duties required of the position, including work lists, logs, and pending lists. Manages turn-around times of pre-analytical testing and patient wait times. Performs venipunctures in accordance with facility and laboratory policies and procedures. Assures all test tubes are labeled accurately when performing venipuncture using facility and laboratory designated patient identifiers. Verifies correct patient identification, performs proper specimen handling and labeling, accessions specimens, checks that lab test requests are consistent with physician orders, generates labels and sorts labeled specimens to be distributed to specific laboratory sections. Performs work in the testing and examination procedures carried out in the laboratory. Performs the full range of routine and emergency waived testing procedures such as glucose monitoring, urine pregnancy, occult blood testing. Performs urine drug testing collections in accordance with facility and laboratory policies and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, weekend and holiday rotation.
