
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director and the Associate Director of Central Sterile Supply, the Assistant Director of Central Sterile Supply is the supervisor of the supply, processing, reprocessing, and sterilization function of Central Sterile Supply. The processing function consists of a 24 hour, seven day a week operation. The processing operation includes all items to be sterilized and processed requiring special handling. Included in this process are all operating room instruments, assembled trays, endoscopy equipment, etc.
The Processing and Instrument Supervisor shall determine the proper technique for the type of sterilization necessary for processing. She/he is responsible for performing the duties of the Associate Director of Central Sterile Supply in his/her absence. She/he is responsible for performing the duties of the implementing and maintaining the Case Cart System. She/he has research and advisement responsibilities and assists within the framework set by the Central sterile Supply Manager.
Duties may include the following but are not limited to:
- Supervises, assigns and directs the activities of all personnel performing processing function
- Evaluates the performance of the CSS technicians
- Establishes and maintains a good professional rapport with the medical staff, nurses, and staff of patient care areas and all other applicable departments and units
- Establishes and enforces departmental policies and procedures in accordance with hospital and university policies units
- Reviews and makes the appropriate recommendations in reference to all new supplies and equipment for the unit
- Develops, schedules, conducts and documents in-services in instrumentation handling and continuing education programs for the personnel of the unit
- Meets or exceeds standards of compliance of all the accreditation and regulatory bodies and commissions in relationship to supply, processing and sterilization
- Submits periodic reports to the CSS Director concerning the functional phases of the unit.
- Performs the appropriate committee functions as assigned.
- Attends staff meetings and conferences at the CSS Director's discretion.
- Oversight responsibility for operation of all sterilization modalities (high vacuum autoclaves, ethylene oxide, hydrogen peroxide plasma) according to specified policies and procedures and regulatory standards
- Develops and requires strict adherence to maximum quality control processing standards.
- Develops and accomplishes unit objectives on a regular basis.
- Coordinates specialty services (floor trays/outpatient areas) instruments, and other medical/surgical needs for fiscal year.
- Secures implants, prostheses or any other devices urgently needed for surgery or patient care from other hospitals, vendors, etc., coordinating transportation of same
- Aids in the evaluation process of products and instruments to be current in the state of the art as well as assessing for cost effective measures to perform procedures
- Develops teaching tools for trays and instruments for each surgical service
- Researches obsolete and discontinued instrumentation for replacement
- Responsible for L & D instrumentation and medical/surgical supplies
- Collaborates with OR clinician to standardize implants and effect price reduction
- Plans workflow improvement in conjunction with case cart selection and facility layout
- Collaboration of departmental repairs and construction
- Collaborates with OR Implant Manager in tracking requirements for implantable medical devices
- Member of CSS/OR CQI group
- Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by the CSS manager
- Must attend annually at least one educational offering in material or personnel management, infection control, or on programs related to sterile processing technology
- Trains and supervises CSS staff on Abacus Instrument Tracking System and maintains communication with the vendor on progam updates, troubleshooting, etc.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications: The candidate should have at least a high school education with considerable central sterile supply experience. A minimum of 5 years of Central Sterile Supply or Operating Room with instrumentation responsibilities - with at least one year experience on a supervisor or lead technician level. Familiarity with function is preferred.
Effective, January 1, 2015 anyone employed into this position must obtain the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Central Supply Processing Department Technician (CSPDT) credential by their 18th month anniversary from their hire date into the position.

Preferred Qualifications: A baccalaureate degree in biology or bacteriology is highly desirable and Operating Room experience is essential.
