This position is located in the Core Laboratory of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Program at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, WV. The Medical Technician is responsible for performing a wide range of emergency, routine, complex and specialized test procedures in Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Urinalysis with minimal onsite supervision. These procedures range from basic screening tests to DNA amplification. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to perform the duties of this position. -AND- To qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level, you must meet one of the following requirements: Experience: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6) in Federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Medical Technician. Specialized experience for this position includes: (a) performing technical medical laboratory support work such as laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) providing technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of a Medical Technician. This also includes experience collecting, categorizing, cataloging, storing, and maintaining specimen integrity; and calibrating, standardizing, and maintaining equipment and instruments. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week. -OR- Education: Successful completion of one (1) full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) from an accredited institution with course work directly related to the work of a Medical Technician may be substituted for the experience required at the GS-07 grade level. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and transcripts are required. -OR- Combination: Combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond 9 semester hours) as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of a Medical Technician is fully qualifying at the GS-07 grade level.
