The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department at San Jose State University (SJSU) invites applications for one full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We highly encourage candidates with a demonstrated commitment to promoting equity and reducing health disparities. Research areas focusing on addressing health outcomes disparities and the root causes of diseases of despair such as substance abuse, depression, and suicide, and developing more accessible and/or less invasive therapies for those who live with a wide range of chronic diseases and/or disabilities that result from health inequity, are of particular interest. Examples of relevant research areas include wearable sensors, drug delivery systems, brain-computer interfaces, therapeutic applications of Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Technologies and interventions aiming at reducing health disparities may include point-of-care diagnostic tools, telemedicine, and medical devices designed to be accessible and culturally appropriate for diverse communities.
The incumbent is expected to teach a broad portfolio of courses, consistent with the current program curriculum and department needs, which may include biomechanics, biomedical electronics, bioinstrumentation, bioimaging, biomaterials, biomedical device design and/or manufacturing. They will also develop new courses that build on their expertise, and establish a sustainable research path to advance the field, engage our students, and further improve the visibility of our institution.
The BME Department is home to dynamic programs for BS and MS degrees in Biomedical Engineering. We have developed strong ties and collaborations with the biomedical engineering industries around us. Our BS and MS curricula were developed in close consultation with our Industry Advisory Council. They engage our students, share their practical experiences and sometimes teach some of our classes, thus ensuring our graduates are “industry-ready.” Our BS and MS programs are home to approximately 400 students, many of who are engaged in academic research with faculty, or work on projects with industries. Our full-time faculty are all active researchers and are successful in attracting major funding from industry, local and state-wide funding programs, and federal institutions such as the NIH, NSF and the DoD. Their research interests span microfluidic devices for diagnostics, nanotechnology for drug delivery, cardiovascular mechanics and devices, and prosthetics and orthotics, among others.
