This position is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the Dallas VA Medical Center under the Emergency Medicine Service. GS-09 specialized experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-8 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include: responds to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, makes an independent preliminary assessment of the patient's condition and selects from a variety of prescribed protocols, administers basic and advanced life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards, which may include providing advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), international trauma life support (ITLS), PALS, PEPP, advanced airway management, CPR, and/or drug treatments, Operates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies which may include ambulance, extrication tools, blood pressure cuff, cardiac monitor, glucose monitor, defibrillator, endotracheal tube, external pacing device, 12 lead EKG airway equipment, intravenous pump, laryngoscope, oxygen terminal, pulse oximetry monitor, CPAP, auto-ventilator, pediatric equipment, medical supplies, radio communications equipment, and general office equipment, operates the emergency transport vehicle and uses telephone and radio communications equipment and systems. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9, if it is directly related to the work of the position. The Paramedic responds to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening. You will determine and prioritize appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance. You will perform patient triage and take/records patient's vital signs as needed, and perform physical examinations and obtain patient history, assesses status of patient's neurological system, cardiovascular system, circulatory system, skeletal system, orthopedic system, motor and sensory skills, and level of consciousness. You will determine, with due regard to the patient's condition, if and how the patient can be moved and to which medical facility the patient should be transported. You will prioritize treatments for patients having multiple problems and employ a variety of advanced emergency medicine techniques, methods, and equipment during transport to the appropriate medical facility. You will administer basic and advanced life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards, which may include providing advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), international trauma life support (ITLS), PALS, PEPP, advanced airway management, CPR, and/or drug treatments. Perform invasive and non-invasive procedures on patients with life threatening and non-life-threatening conditions per established procedures or as authorized/directed by physicians. Respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies, performs cardiac monitoring and defibrillation; maintains circulation controls bleeding and provides spinal management and immobilization. Provide fluid resuscitation by IV and manage trauma injuries, bleeding, and post-traumatic shock. Operate or utilize various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies which may include ambulance, extrication tools, blood pressure cuff, cardiac monitor, glucose monitor, defibrillator, endotracheal tube, external pacing device, 12 lead EKG airway equipment, intravenous pump, laryngoscope, oxygen terminal, pulse oximetry monitor, CPAP, auto-ventilator, pediatric equipment, medical supplies, radio communications equipment, and general office equipment. Select the most efficient route to and from sites, taking into consideration traffic patterns, health facility locations, etc. Perform thorough safety and operator maintenance inspections and makes minor repairs on a variety of emergency ambulances, patient transport vehicles, and medical equipment. Ensures that the vehicles are kept clean and neat. Responsible for taking patients to and from medical areas, and coordinates, with the patient and unit, the time of departure. Assist in lifting and carrying patients into or out of transport vehicles and into treatment facility. Utilizes various tools and equipment to transport patients, such as Henley backboards, EKG monitor and defibrillator, and mechanical CPR device, etc. Paramedics will perform other related duties as assigned.
