The role you'll contribute:
The Microbiology Supervisor provides technical expertise and \oversight of the microbiology department. Develops and maintains all policies, procedures, processes, various documents, and quality assurance program applicable to specialty. In concert with and under direction of the Medical Director and Laboratory Administration, ensures that necessary clinically effective testing, products, and services are offered and introduces new tests, procedures and instrumentation as required, including test or instrument evaluation, selection and/or recommendation. Serves as the chair of the System Team Meeting applicable to specialty. Supervises, designs, assigns and/or performs all aspects (pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical) of laboratory testing and procedures; quality control process; performance improvement activities; interviewing and final recommendation of new staff members to the Director of Operations; training of new employees; ongoing competency assessment of staff; advanced problem solving for customers and staff; departmental equipment operation, maintenance, and upgrades; writing/reviewing procedures and processes. Actively manages daily operations of laboratory/specialty, within approved operational and capital budgets, meeting departmental goals in all areas. Work customarily involves supervision of analytical testing of blood and/or other biological specimens. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Demonstrates managerial behaviors appropriate to the position. Participates as a member of various committees, teams, and councils for the Laboratory, including cross-campus laboratory teams, and campus specific teams/committees as may be assigned.
Serves as a technical resource throughout the system, and Corporate if requested, and chairs the System Team applicable to specialty.
Collaborates with Laboratory Administration, Medical Director, and Campus Laboratories to maintain necessary and clinically effective testing, products, services, and instrumentation/equipment. Introduces new tests, processes and instrumentation/equipment which may include recommendation, selection, evaluation, cost analysis, change management, and education.
Prepares and manages, under direction of Assistant Director or Director of Operations, an operating budget that ensures appropriate staffing, professional development, space, supplies, and equipment, necessary for improving and maintaining the quality of services.
Develops and/or oversees development of new policies, procedures, or processes in the document control system. Ensures that policies are reviewed at specific intervals and meet regulatory requirements.
Supervises, manages, assigns and/or performs all pre-analytical and support activities related to department operations. Activities may include general and analytical equipment maintenance, function checks and documentation; inventory control and supply stocking; specimen collection; biological specimen processing; cleaning and disinfection of selected or assigned laboratory equipment and spaces; quality control and calibration performance; answering the telephone, clerical and/or receptionist duties; and other pre-analytical activities.
Manages, supervises, assigns and/or performs all testing and analytical procedures for assigned department or work area. Ensures staff performance in proficiency testing, consistently adhering to federal and state regulations as well as hospital policies. Consistently ensures department workspaces are maintained in a neat, organized, and properly supplied manner, and that documentation is complete, properly stored and safeguarded.
Qualifications
The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological science, or medical technology/laboratory science
Three years of clinical Microbiology experience.
Must hold a national certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist such as ASCP, or AMT unless grandfathered per state requirement.
Preferred:
Minimum two years of experience in a supervisory role in a complex clinical laboratory
Experience with regulatory and accreditation of laboratory operations
