The Center for Translational Medical Devices (CENTMED) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to recruit a postdoctoral research associate to contribute to the advancement of laparoscopic and endoscopic tools used in minimally invasive surgical technologies.
One of the biggest challenges in laparoscopic surgery is the lost sense of touch, as well as the limited dexterity and articulation of instruments. These factors affect precision, efficiency, and the ability to perform complex procedures. Traditional laparoscopic tools often lack tactile sensing mechanisms, are rigid, and have restricted movement, making delicate tasks such as suturing, tissue dissection, and fine manipulation particularly challenging. The successful candidate will lead an innovative research project focused on developing next-generation laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical tools to enhance tactile sensation, maneuverability, precision, and ergonomics in minimally invasive surgeries. Our group has developed novel laparoscopic systems featuring tactile feedback mechanisms. The candidate will further advance this technology by working closely with collaborating surgeons to refine the design for improved surgical performance in laparoscopy, endoscopy, and potentially robotic surgery.
The candidate will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment alongside PhD-level engineers and scientists, graduate students, and full-time researchers. They will also have the chance to contribute to other projects within CENTMED, working on cutting-edge initiatives spanning metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurologic diseases. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on next-generation surgical technologies, bridging the gap between engineering innovation and clinical application.
Applicants must have a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. Intensive prior knowledge and experience in design and experimental work, instrumentation, microfabrication, and 3D printing are essential. Excellent communication skills in English, the ability to work in high-volume settings, and the capability to be involved in various multidisciplinary projects are required. For consideration, applicants need to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae with full publication list, statement of research interests and three letters of reference, and a transcript, all in PDF format. If you have any questions, please email: maq4@nyu.edu
The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled.
