The role youll contribute:
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II performs various laboratory procedures in assigned areas as licensed/certified. Work customarily involves analytical testing of blood and/or human biological specimens. Analytical laboratory testing generally requires a moderate to high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise in licensed area(s). Depending on campus and department, various pre-and post-analytical work processes are included in the work duties customarily performed; on-call hours may also be required. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II conducts a variety of laboratory procedures in designated areas as licensed or certified. This role entails the analytical testing of blood and/or human biological specimens, requiring a moderate to high degree of both theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise in the certified area(s). Laboratory testing encompasses complex diagnostic and analytic assessments of specimens, including interpreting data with precision and accuracy according to established policies and procedures. Duties customarily involve a range of pre- and post-analytical work processes depending on the campus and department and may also require participation in on-call rotations.
Professionals in this position are responsible for adhering to laboratory policies and procedures while maintaining quality control practices. This role may also involve managing selected aspects of laboratory processes or shifts, which could include workflow management, quality control processes, performance improvement activities, training of new employees, advanced problem-solving for customers and coworkers, and maintenance and upgrades of department equipment or computer systems. Additionally, writing or reviewing procedures and assisting lab leadership in meeting goals across various areas such as Team, Service, Clinical, Market, and Finance may be required.
A strong commitment to outstanding customer service is essential, with an emphasis on maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. The role may also involve the development and implementation of policies and procedures for new equipment and/or assays, including the development of quality control procedures that outline acceptable guidelines and monitoring. The Medical Laboratory Scientist II must perform, evaluate, and accurately record quality control testing on all reportable assays and ensure routine and unscheduled maintenance is performed timely to assure proper operation of medical laboratory equipment.

Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, which may include general and analytical equipment maintenance, function checks and documentation; inventory control and supply stocking, specimen collection as needed; biological specimen processing; cleaning and disinfection of selected or assigned laboratory equipment and spaces; quality control and calibration performance; and other pre-analytical activities
Performs all expected tests and analytical procedures for assigned department or work area efficiently and accurately, according to established procedures, performance standards, and departmental competency standards. Participates in proficiency testing, consistently adhering to federal and state regulations as well as Institutional policies
Performs post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, reporting results (including highly abnormal results) in accordance with established procedures. Provides and acts on technical and support information related to the elements of laboratory testing for all age groups, neonatal through geriatric patients
Provides orientation and training to new employees and medical technology students as needed, under the direction of the lab leadership. May act as a preceptor when teaching new staff and Students when assigned. Appropriately documents orientation and training of new employees and medical technology students.
Provides guidance to technicians and support staff, resolution to customer service issues within guidelines, and support education to clinical staff as appropriate or requested. Facilitates workflow when necessary
Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.
Employee job duties may include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment
Participates in, and has knowledge of, laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities
Performs various support activities to facilitate operation of assigned department or work area
Participates in the evaluation of new laboratory techniques and procedures. Assists with data collection and special projects, as assigned. Assists in the documentation and submission of required laboratory, departmental, and staff statistics/reports
May assess competencies according to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations
Qualifications
The expertise and experiences youll need to succeed :
Required:
Bachelors in in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR Bachelor's degree equivalency with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND have a laboratory training program that includes: completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above); or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs testing OR Successful completion of at least a 50-week official US military medical laboratory procedures training course and currently hold or have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician); or qualified and served as high complexity testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024.
National certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist such as ASCP, AAB, or AMT
