Medical Technician (Phlebotomy)
The position is assigned to the Columbia VA Health Care System's Pathology and Laboratory Service. The employee is responsible for collecting venous or capillary blood specimens from a diverse patient population in the outpatient collection area, emergency room, and inpatient units. These duties are difficult and complex involving many steps, and requiring a high degree of specialization. Performs venipunctures by correctly identifying patients as to name and full social security number, selecting appropriate collection devices (i.e., proper collection tube, appropriate anticoagulant, etc.), adhering to correct order of draw and taking any necessary precautions in specimen preparation (i.e., mixing, protect carotenes from light, place ammoni
