Specialized experience includes: Responsible for the overall management and supervision of the emergency patient transportation and Ambulance Service Program (ASP) for a Veterans Affairs Medical Center; Develops, coordinates, and implements programs, budgets, policies, regulations and emergency response procedures; Technical advisors to management on all matters pertaining to emergency medical services and ambulance transportation matters; Evaluates the work performance of subordinates and creates performance standards; Plan the tasks and assignments of all ASP staff, set and adjust short and long-term term priorities for ambulance service duties. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Emergency Care First Response Patient Care Technical Competence Technology Application ["This position is assigned to the Fayetteville, NC Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Transportation Services (VTS), Ambulance Service, in various VA Medical Center (VAMC) locations with an emergency room, acute care or urgent care clinic, or other similar departments performing basic and advanced life support procedures. This position performs technical duties as a Paramedic (Basic and Advanced Life Support Services). In addition to performing all the duties and responsibilities of a Paramedic, the incumbent will, as a regular and recurring part of their assignment, lead three or more Paramedics, and a cadre of Emergency Medical Technicians Major duties include but are not limited to the following: The Lead Paramedic identifies, distributes, and balances the workload and tasks among the line Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) in accordance with established workflow and/or skill level. Makes day-to-day adjustments to accomplish the workload, in accordance with established priorities or directives from the supervisor, and ensures timely accomplishment of assigned team tasks. Reviews the work of EMTs and Paramedics work priorities, methods, deadlines and quality have been met. Amends or corrects work performance not meeting established standards. Ensures that each employee has an integral role in completing the daily team mission. In addition to the lead duties, the Lead Paramedic performs all the duties and responsibilities of a Paramedic. Incumbent must the have the knowledge and ability to lead and perform the following: Responds to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening. Determines and prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance. Lead Paramedics shall have broad knowledge and skills sufficient to provide and gather information on the human body structure, function, illnesses and diseases, and the treatment procedure supporting patient charting and goals for the assigned patient for the purpose of communicating with the patients and nursing/medical staff members. The Lead Paramedic administers basic and advanced life support care at emergency scenes in accordance with established medical standards, which may include providing advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), international trauma life support (ITLS), PALS, PEPP, advanced airway management, CPR, and/or drug treatments. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Takes appropriate measures to prevent disease transmission or exposure to bodily fluids. Operates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies which may include ambulance, extrication tools, blood pressure cuff, cardiac monitor, glucose monitor, defibrillator, endotracheal tube, external pacing device, 12 lead EKG airway equipment, intravenous pump, laryngoscope, oxygen terminal, pulse oximetry monitor, CPAP, auto-ventilator, pediatric equipment, medical supplies, radio communications equipment, and general office equipment. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined areas. Incumbent may be required to spend prolonged periods in protective breathing apparatus and protective clothing during chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous materials incidents/exercises. Work Environment: On a regular and recurring basis, employee is exposed to infection and contagious diseases, is required to work in all types of weather and traffic conditions, and faces risks and discomforts at the scene of accidents, to include the possibility of noxious fumes, dangerous substances, cuts, bruises, etc., requiring the Lead Paramedic to comply with special safety and health precautions and/or to use protective gear.
