Position Summary
A research technician position is available in the lab of Prof. Chong Xie at Rice University (Houston TX). Our lab is focused on the development of ultra-flexible polymer neural probes for electrophysiological recording of brain activity in small animals. We strive to create an electrode for stable chronic recordings lasting multiple months with the goal of translation of this technology for clinical use in humans.
As a research technician you will be playing a key role on neural probe assembly and assist in small batch manufacturing using various micromachining tools. Ideally, you will already have familiarity with a microscope and small hand tools. Prior experience with PCB assembly and prototyping tools like 3D printer, CNC mill, laser cutter, etc is a plus. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is willing to learn and thrives in multifaceted projects.
Essential Functions

PCB assembly (SMT and connector soldering)

Probe assembly and small hand tool operation

Conducting quality testing and maintaining track record of the results

Micromanufacturing tool operation (laser cutters, 3D printer, etc)

Assists in the laboratory setup and day-to-day technical operations including promoting safety, maintaining equipment

Prepares procurement requests and orders materials and supplies, manages sample and stock database, sets up and manages experiments, and maintains research results for publications

Performs all other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications

Experience with PCB assembly like SMT soldering, reflow oven operation, QA testing equipment

Demonstrated ability to work with small hand tools under microscope

Good organization skills and strong attention to detail

Ability to listen and communicate effectively (verbal, written)

Ability to work independently and in team environments
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field of study

Experience with PCB design and procurement

Experience of operating CNC tools and knowledge of g-code programming language
