Strategic Communication M.A. Program Director
The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota invites applications for the position of a full-time instructor and director of the Strategic Communication master’s program. The Strategic Communication M.A. Program will begin its 18th year in 2022 and enjoys a strong reputation for educating working professionals advancing to managerial-level positions in public relations, advertising and marketing communications. The program offers a wide variety of courses taught by renowned professionals and scholars. The director will co-lead the program with the academic director.
The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in advertising, public relations or marketing communications. The candidate will apply this background to build a professional network to recruit students and foster relationships with potential employers and adjunct faculty. The candidate will also draw on their professional experience to advocate for students, collaborate on new courses and professional programs, and serve as a thought leader for the school.
Working with the program’s current leadership team, the successful candidate will support the School’s professional strategic communication programs consistent with its goals related to recruitment, retention, graduation, expanding online/flexible learning options, and improving diversity, equity and inclusion. As a member of the teaching faculty, the candidate will also teach at the graduate and undergraduate level. Teaching responsibilities include instructing two courses per semester, teaching capstone students during May and June, and advising graduate and undergraduate students in strategic communication.
Additional responsibilities include program administration, including marketing, planning and executing professional engagement forums, curriculum development, scholarship allocation and budget management. The candidate will create a marketing strategy for student recruitment, industry outreach, donor relations and marketing communications.
Candidates ideally should hold a graduate degree in communication, business or a related field, and several years’ experience in strategic communication or associated fields. Demonstrated teaching experience is desired. The position includes both remote (online) and in-person responsibilities, and an on-campus presence is expected. Courses in the Strategic Communication M.A. program are offered in remote (online) and hybrid formats, while many events, meetings and professional development sessions are on campus. Undergraduate teaching is primarily in person, on campus. This position is a renewable, 12-month appointment; it is not a tenure-track position. The salary range, title and rank for the position is dependent on relevant education and experience. Review of applications begins May 16 and remains open until filled.
